But I really didn’t have an issue playing games on either of them. Occasionally with the Kishi, it felt like the sides of the controller could move a little bit on the phone because there isn’t a back piece keeping it rigid like the Backbone One. Overall, this makes it bigger than the Razer Kishi when not in use but it feels a little more stable than the Kishi.

To install a phone, just pull them apart, install the device and it’s ready to go. It would appear that the name for the Backbone One comes from the large expandable piece that supports the two sides of the controller. That’s something that the Kishi doesn’t have and opens up the Backbone One to more headsets than just wireless Bluetooth offerings. And it also features a 3.5mm jack to use headphones with the controller. But the Backbone One does feature a Lightning passthrough so the phone can be charged while gaming. It’s powered by a connected phone so no need for external power cables or supplies. Included with the Backbone One are some simple instructions and that’s about it.

Chances are you did it once or twice and then never reopened the game. You’ll wonder how in the heck you played with just a phone. But whether we were playing a shoot-em-up like Doom, a racing game like Gear Club Stradale, or a flight-sim game like AirFighters Combat Flight Sim, the controls were silky smooth. So that was our first stop, where we very quickly discovered that we still, in fact, suck at Doom II. Not surprisingly, the easiest use of the Backbone is on Apple Arcade, because there’s no proprietary app or membership needed. (The Backbone One comes with all kinds of free trials: one month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, three months of Discord Nitro, one month of Apple Arcade, and two months of Stadia Pro.) There’s icons showing whether they are in Apple Arcade, Google Stadia, Steam (via the SteamLink app), Xbox (usually via the Xbox Cloud Gaming app), PlayStation Remote Play, Discord, and others.
